H125 delivered to Lao Skyway

Airbus Helicopters has delivered a new H125 to Lao Skyway for civil and parapublic missions, including domestic charter flights and search-and-locate operations, the company announced on 16 February. A second H125 is expected to be delivered in May 2017. Both aircraft were ordered in August 2016.

Bel Air AW189s reach flight milestone

Bel Air's two AW189 helicopters surpassed 6,000 flight hours in January, the company announced on 15 February. The helicopters support long range offshore oil and gas transport missions in the North Sea and offshore wind turbine support.

Rosneft subsidiary orders more AW189s

Leonardo’s helicopter division has secured another order for its AgustaWestland AW189 super-medium rotorcraft from RN-Aircraft, a subsidiary of oil giant Rosneft. The deal for 20 AW189s follows a similar pact announced in July 2015 for 10 examples of the 8.3t helicopter.

AgustaWestland AW189 nears UK SAR debut

Leonardo Helicopters appears close to securing long-awaited certification for the full ice protection system (FIPS) on the AgustaWestland AW189 – a vital move that will clear the 8.3t rotorcraft for search and rescue (SAR) operations in the UK. Operator Bristow Helicopters had been due to introduce the AW189 on its SAR contract with the UK government in April 2015, but postponed its deployment pending FIPS approval. So far it has taken delivery of just three of a planned 11 units.

Armed S-70i breaks cover in Poland

Sikorsky company PZL Mielec used NATO’s multi-national exercise Anakonda to debut an armed version of the S-70i Black Hawk in mid-June. On display in Drawsko Pomorskie, Poland, the rotorcraft attracted visitors including Polish defence minister Antoni Macierewicz. Four pylons under stub wings can be used to carry Lockheed Martin AGM-114 Hellfire air-to-surface missiles, seven- or 19-round Hydra 70 rocket pods and GAU-19 gun pods, plus 200USgal crashworthy external fuel system tanks. The aircraft also can be equipped with an electro-optical/infrared sensor turret and door-mounted 12.7mm machine guns or M134 miniguns.

Airbus seals helicopter deal with China

Airbus and a Chinese consortium made up of China Aviation Supplies (CAS), Qingdao United General Aviation Industrial Development (Qingdao United) and CITIC Offshore Helicopter (COHC) have agreed to set up a final assembly operation to complete 100 H135 light-twin helicopters in Qingdao. This deal is part of a letter of intent signed last year for an order worth US$788 million, Airbus said.
